Ready-made distance glasses: who they suit

Ready-made distance glasses have a minus strength in both lenses to correct short sight (myopia). They work well as a spare or sports pair for people whose two eyes have similar prescriptions and little or no astigmatism.

Check your prescription first

Look at the SPH (sphere) figure for each eye on your prescription. If both are minus and within 0.50 of each other, and the CYL (cylinder) figure is blank or 0.50 or less, a ready-made pair at your SPH strength will usually be comfortable.

Who needs made-to-prescription lenses

Anyone with a large difference between eyes, significant astigmatism, a prism correction or varifocals. For driving, your glasses must let you meet the DVLA eyesight standard.

Questions people ask

Can I drive in ready-made distance glasses?

Only if they let you meet the DVLA standard: reading a car number plate from 20 metres. If in doubt, get an eye test.
